Flora Macdonald Outfit
A gift of a set of vintage "Flora Macdonald" knitting needles inspired a trio of designs based on the dramatic flight of Bonnie Prince Charlie which was famously aided by Flora Macdonald. The Cluaran shawl draws inspiration from the thistle, which is the national flower of Scotland. The Jacobite Rose hat set (which has since also appeared in cardigan form) was inspired by the rose hips on the Jacobite roses growing in my garden. The Flora woven wrap, made in my Hebridean 2 Ply, takes inspiration from the plaids worn in Scotland in the 1700s.
You can see the finished Flora Macdonald outfit here, with hat set, shawl and wrap working together with a dramatically gathered wool skirt designed by Jade. Emma wears the outfit on the Lewis moor not far from where Charlie made landfall on the Isle of Lewis. You can also find out more about the Flora Macdonald inspired designs in the video below.
